Billy Block Documentary

The story of Billy Block, Mr. Nashville, Godfather of Americana Music, inspiration to thousands, show host, community creator, and backbeat of the band. Why Godfather? Because he created the first ever Americana radio playlist, and a new genre of music was born.

“Billy was the heartbeat of alternative country sensibilities in Nashville, there wouldn’t be any East Nashville hipster community without his enthusiasm for all things cool, especially music. He was father, husband and friend, and we won’t soon see his likes again."
-Rodney Crowell

Narrative Synopsis

Point of View

This will be told from the community’s Point-of-View, through the voices of the people he helped. The people who loved him and the people who couldn’t really figure him out.

Narrative Arc

We’re crafting a story using the traditional three-act structure in a non-linear sequence, as follows:

• Act 1: The Western Beat live and radio shows in LA, the story of the call from the Gavin folks, the decision to move to Nashville.

• Act 2: We go back in time and show how he got started playing and writing for Buddy Magazine in Houston, arrived in LA made his contacts, started the Western Beat live and radio shows, wrote for Music Connection Magazine, and began to create a following—the community.

• Act 3: The move to Nashville, the shows, the press, the playlists and the radio; the community and scene and his public battle with cancer and uplifting celebration of his life at the Ryman Auditorium.
